Massoud was a legendary fighter, nicknamed the "Lion of Panjshir."

A few months prior to the 9/11 attacks on the US, he warned of the threat of terrorism against the West on a trip to Europe. The threat was not taken seriously at the time.

Some experts believe that the charismatic Massoud outshone other Jihadi leaders because of the sheer force of his personality, which he used to unite various factions together in the Northern Alliance.
