Freedom of speech and the press are considered the major achievements of the Afghan government in the past decade. Free media and freedom of speech are guaranteed under Afghanistan's constitution and in media law, but the laws are not always fully applied and, in some cases, retrogressive and conservative voices have challenged these gains.
