At least 8 police were killed and 9 others were wounded Wednesday night in Taliban attacks in northern and southern Afghanistan

In the first attack in the north-eastern Kunduz province, 8 police were killed and one other was wounded.

"These soldiers were killed when the Taliban attacked a police checkpoint in Kunduz city, the provincial capital of Kunduz," Mahboobullah Saeedi, a spokesman for the governor of Kunduz told TOLOnews.

Only one of these soldiers survived the attack, who was able to force the Taliban to retreat, he added.

Taliban casualties have not been reported in the attack.

Meanwhile, 8 police were wounded in a Taliban attack on a police checkpoint in the southern Ghazni province on Wednesday night.

"The Taliban attacked a police checkpoint in the province's Qara Bagh district, in which 8 police were wounded," Zorawar Zahid, the Police Chief of Ghazni told TOLOnews reporter.

Taliban have also had casualties in the incident, he added.

Police checkpoints throughout the country have frequently come under Taliban attacks recently.

According to the Afghan Ministry of Interior, 152 police were killed and 291 others were wounded in insurgency related incidents last month that showed a 5 percent increase in the same month.
