Twenty schoolgirls and their teacher were gas-poisoned in a girls' school in the Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday morning

The incident happened in the city's Karte Naw area.

"Twenty schoolgirls and one teacher were taken to Rahman Mina Hospital for treatment," Dr. Faqir Muhammad Faqir, head of the hospital in Kabul told TOLOnews reporter.

The poisoned ones were carried to the nearby hospitals in Kabul, eyewitnesses said.

"I was in the class when a car came and threw something, there was a fog and then I did not know what happened," the school teacher, in a state of severe dizziness and pain, told TOLOnews reporter.

"I was in the school when I suddenly smelt gas," said a little school girl.

The incident had happened due to some unknown gas used in the school, said Noorulhaq Yosufzai, head of the Indra Ghandi child health hospital.

Afghan authorities confirmed the incident refusing to reveal further details.

No groups, including the Taliban have taken responsibility for the attack so far.

The incident happens 3 days after 70 students from a girls' school were taken to the hospital after a suspected gas poisoning in the same location in Kabul.

The poisoning of school students, especially the girls' schools recently have increased concern among many families in Afghanistan.

The recent attack is another example of Islamic extremists showing opposition to female education.

Taliban extremists have, however, set fire to dozens of schools, threatened teachers and even attacked schoolgirls in rural areas, especially in the country's southern provinces.
