Four US troops were killed in road-side bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, provincial officials say

No other details were given about the incident and the service members were not identified by name because of the policy.

The latest deaths bring the number of US troops' deaths in this month to 53, still below the figure of 66 for July which was the deadliest month for US troops in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion.

Taliban insurgency is at its highest in southern and eastern Afghanistan and these are the regions where almost all of the coalition deaths have come.

NATO commanders have warned casualties will mount as coalition and Afghan forces enter areas under long-time Taliban control.

The NATO force peaked this month to more than 140,000 with the arrival of the last reinforcements that President Obama deployed to Afghanistan in a bid to turn the tide of the nearly 9 year war.
