A British soldier was killed in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan on Friday, the UK's Defence Ministry said.

The soldier was shot during a foot patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province.

Britain has about 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, with most of them based in Helmand.

The death brings to 397 the number of British troops who have died in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday will fly to London to meet British Prime Minister David Cameron and sign a strategic partnership pact.

The document will ensure the UK's long-term commitment to Afghanistan beyond 2014 and covers a wide range of areas including the political, security, economic and cultural spheres as well as co-operation on counter narcotics, rule of law, media and capacity-building.
