Pressure is mounting on Syria as the UN Security Council meets to discuss a new plan calling for President Bashar al-Assad to hand over power, the BBC reported. Western countries and the Arab League will ask the Council to back the League's new plan asking for Mr Assad to resign.
Russia has threatened to veto any such resolution. It has a naval base in the country and supplies arms to Syria.
Ten of the 15 countries on the Security Council now support the Arab League document, the BBC said. At least nine council members must give their backing for a resolution to be put to a vote.
As one of the five permanent council members, Russia can block any proposed resolution.
