Balkh Airport Victims Seek Justice

About a dozen women gathered on Sunday outside the home of Asif Mohmad, a provincial council member, in protest against the recent incident at the Maulana Jalaluddin Balkhi International Airport in Mazar-e-Sharif and called on the national unity government (NUG) to ensure justice is carried out.

The women blamed the governor of Balkh Atta Mohammad Noor for the incident and called for a fair investigation.

More than ten women had gathered outside the house but none of them would reveal their names

“The guy who was killed (in the shooting) at the airport was my brother and I want justice,” one of the woman said.

“Guilty and innocent are not yet identified, they only killed and said that you are my enemy, guilty must be identified,” another woman said.

But Balkh provincial governor's spokesman Munir Ahmad Farhad called the gathering a conspiracy against Noor.

Farhad said that the women should go to government and human rights organizations to lodge complaints not to the house of a provincial council member who himself is accused of corruption and forgery.

“This a political conspiracy  and they want to make it a big drama; if it was true the governor's office is ready to be responsible toward any kind of injustice and anomalies that are created by the people and hand them over to the law,” Farhad said.

Mohmand, a member of the Balkh Provincial Council was arrested by security forces at Mazar airport last week after his supporters allegedly clashed with security forces on Monday night resulting in the death of two people, local officials said.

On Thursday, Mohmand held a press conference in Kabul and claimed he was "badly beaten" while in the custody of Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor.

However, last week Farhad rejected the claims and said they stem from “personal enmity from Mohmand.”

“It is laughable and is not logical,” he said on Thursday.

A fact-finding team from the Presidential Palace was sent to the province on Wednesday and met with the Balkh governor to talk about the issue.

The nine-member team was led by the deputy attorney general of Afghanistan.

Mohmand was accused of forging signatures on documents of government officials by the Afghan legal and judicial institutions.

The fact-finding team from the Presidential Palace led by the deputy attorney general of Afghanistan told TOLOnews that they will announce their results once the investigation is completed.
