Calls Rise For Loya Jirga To Resolve 'Crisis'

Critics, members of Afghan political parties, former cabinet members and Kabul residents on Thursday expressed outrage over the current situation in the country and called for an urgent Loya Jirga.

The calls were made at a gathering on Thursday in the capital.

Members of political parties said the aim was not to bring down the government. However, some did call for the return of former president Hamid Karzai to power.

“Dear brothers! To address the current issues of the country, we do not have any other prescription for Afghanistan; the only comprehensive and important solution which has worked throughout the history of the country is a traditional Loya Jirga,” said Shahzada Massoud, a former minister in Karzai's cabinet.

“The security situation is deteriorating day-by-day in Afghanistan, even the people in Kabul city cannot breathe in peace,” said MP Makhdom Abdullah Mohammadi.

“They say that Hamid Karzai wants a Loya Jirga, we will be very lucky if Hamid Karzai returns, the nation wants him,” said MP and member of Hizb-e-Millat-e-Mutahed party Abdul Rahim Ayoubi.

“We want to raise our voice to government officials and we want to say to them they must stop their illegal actions, the people of Afghanistan no longer have the patience to tolerate their illegal actions," said former presidential advisor and member of Hizb-e-Asas Navin party Ahmadullah Alizai.

This latest move, to hold a Loya Jirga, comes after National Unity Government (NUG) leaders, President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah, pledged at the time of their inauguration to hold a Loya Jirga within two years. The two leaders have been in power now for three years.
