Families Recount Deadly Kabul Attack

Family members of those policemen killed and wounded in Thursday evening suicide attack in Banaee area in Kabul’s PD9 said they waited hours outside hospitals in the city to know about their relatives who were wounded or killed in the incident.

Sarwar Shah, father of a wounded policeman, said he came from Parwan province to see what has happened to his son.

“My son is a police force member. He served in Kunar (province) but he was deployed to Kabul. He was wounded in last night’s attack when he was on a mission. Now he is under treatment at Emergency Hospital,” said Sarwar Shah.

“I am waiting here since 6am in the morning. One family member of mine was martyred in last night’s attack, but my nephew has sustained injures and I don’t know how is he doing,” said Zahid, a family member of another wounded policeman.

Glasses of some buildings in the area were broken and three residents of the area were wounded in the explosion.

“Neither protestors nor government know about their rights and authorities and the regulations of demonstration. They don’t know how to seek justice. Security forces are not equipped with required equipment to stop such protests,” Mir Ahmad Mir, a resident of the area said.

Officials from Kabul Police and Ministry of Interior at a press conference on Friday said the suicide bomber exploded his explosives while security forces had gathered in the area to control the demonstration launched by shopkeepers.

“The suicide attacker came from the side where the protestors were standing and then targeted police force members,” acting Police Chief Mohammad Salim Ehsas said.

The Ministry of Interior gave different figures on casualties of the attack. Sources said at least 20 people were killed in the attack.

“Thirteen police force members lost their lives in the attack. We had 16 wounded policemen. Two civilians were also wounded in the attack. No local resident was wounded in blast,” interior ministry deputy spokesman Nusrat Rahimi said.

Reports say that before the suicide attack, a civilian was killed in police gunfire as they tried to stop the protest.

The civilian was killed after police closed the shops in Banaee area, claiming that they sell drugs and alcoholic drinks.

The shopkeepers however rejected the allegations and launched a protest which turned violent.
