President Ashraf Ghani arrived on Sunday morning in Ashgabat to attend the official opening ceremony of the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and to meet Turkmen officials, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

The statement said Ghani was welcomed by Maksat Babayev, Turkmenistan’s Deputy Chairman for Oil and Gas, representatives of the games, the Turkmen ambassador to Afghanistan and officials from the Afghan embassy in Ashgabat.

Ghani will also meet Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon.

However, the statement did not provide further details.

Ghani is also expected to travel to the US this week for the UN’s General Assembly in New York.
