Illegal Armed Men ‘A Big Challenge For Balkh Residents’

Following political tension between government and Jamiat-e-Islami Party over the removal of Atta Mohammad Noor as governor of Balkh by President Ghani Ashraf Ghani, officials and residents claimed that crime incidents and number of illegal armed men have mounted in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

Members of Balkh Provincial Council said the illegal armed men attempt armed robberies and create disorder in the city.

“Illegal armed men misuse the recent political rift in the country. Disorder has increased (in Balkh),” said Lala, member of Balkh Provincial Council. “Recently, a young man was murdered by armed robbers who were riding a motorbike. Many of residents have been robbed recently.”

Some residents of Mazar-e-Sharif City said they have witnessed robberies conducted by armed men in past few days.

The residents called on Balkh police to address the problem.

“Police vehicle was close when a robber on a motorbike got a phone from a person, but police did not try to stop him,” said Mohammad Fayaz, a resident of Balkh.

“I took my phone out of my pocket to call when two persons riding a motorbike grabbed the phone to steal, but they failed,” said Mohammad Omar, a resident of Balkh.

Meanwhile, Balkh Police Chief Gen. Sayed Kamal Sadat he has assigned all police chiefs in Mazar-e-Sharif City to take actions against armed men in the city.

“We have given the police chiefs of Mazar-e-Sharif police districts a one month deadline. They will lose their jobs if they did not stop robberies and did not maintain security properly,” said Sadat.

The Security Officer of Balkh Police Headquarters, Gen. Abdul Raziq Qaderi, said the presence of illegal armed men is a big challenge for safety of the city. He added that most of these men are belonged to political parties and MPs.

“Information shows that the number of illegal armed men are twice than the security forces in Mazar-e-Sharif City and they are here for many years,” Qaderi said. “These men are belonged to different parties, lawmakers, former jihadi leaders, national investors and the people who carry many weapons by one weapon licensee and this is a big challenge.”
