Russia’s Contact With Taliban Limited To Peace Process: Rabbani

Minister of Foreign Affairs Salahuddin Rabbani has said that Russian officials assured the Afghan government that contact between Russia and the Taliban were aimed only at persuading the insurgent group to endorse peace talks with the Afghan government.

He stated that certain countries in the region, including Russia, have established contact with the Taliban.

Rabbani stressed that Russia has promised the Afghan government that ties with the Taliban were to encourage peace talks between the two sides.

“Our relations with the Taliban are only to motivate them to attend the peace negotiation talks with the government of Afghanistan,” Rabbani quoted the Russian officials as saying.

On Sunday, Rabbani left Kabul for Washington where he is expected to participate at a two day international conference on Daesh in the US.

Foreign ministers from 68 countries are due to attend the conference where they will discuss ways to tackle the terrorist group.

With the dramatic surge in activities and attacks by the Taliban in the country, reports about new engagements between regional nations and the Taliban also added to the concerns of the Afghan government.

As such, the Afghan government has criticized countries for this move.

But on Sunday Rabbani said Moscow had assured Kabul that their dealings with the Taliban were aimed only at supporting the peace talks.

“Russia, besides reiterating its cooperation with the Afghan government, also clarified its position on issues such as war on terrorism, drug trafficking and organized crime. They (Russians) also said that Russia will never endorse groups such as the Taliban (and see them as) a legitimate group,” he said.

“Coming closer with the Taliban will not benefit Russia, China and Iran, but it only strengthens the Taliban and this poses harm to the region,” said military analyst Atiqullah Amarkhail.
