Taliban’s Qatar Office ‘May Be Closed’

The Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah’s office on Saturday said government would probably close the Taliban’s office in Qatar as it has received reports which show the address is used for propaganda andother purposes in favor of the group.

Government has started investigating the reports about the office and it will act accordingly and the assessments are completed, a spokesman for the chief executive of Afghanistan, Jawed Faisal, told TOLOnews.

Faisal said the office will be closed if the allegations about seeking financial resources to the group through the address are true.

“Reports indicate that this office (Taliban’s Qatar office) is used for propaganda and for seekingfinancial resources for the Taliban,” Faisal told TOLOnews. “We are assessing the activities of the office and will act following the assessments.”

Reports indicate that a peace talks meeting will be held in Qatar in the near future.

“Considering the national interests, the High Peace Council welcomes any move on peace,” Habib Sarabi, deputy head of the High Peace Council, told TOLOnews, pointing out to the possibility of a peace talks meeting in a Gulf country.

Last week, the High Peace Council Chairman Mohammad Karim Khalili said the council is ready to start peace talks with the Taliban without any pre-conditions.

He said the Taliban can open their office, for the peace talks, in any part of the world “and even in Kabul”.

Khalili said the Indonesian vice president and a group of that country’s religious scholars will visit Kabul in the near future and are expected to condemn the ongoing war as illegitimate.

Taliban’s office in Qatar was opened in 2013 to facilitate peace talks between Afghan government and representatives of the group.
