Tillerson To Visit India To Discuss Its Role in Afghanistan Plan

The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is expected to underline US President Donald Trump’s strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia during his visit Tuesday to India.

According to The Economic Times, this will be with an eye on stabilizing Afghanistan and establishing a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific to counter-balance an expansionist China.

The report also said that he will visit Islamabad ahead of New Delhi during his five-nation trip and is expected to deliver a blunt message to his Pakistani hosts, once in Islamabad, about cracking down on terror safe havens of terror.

"We expect Pakistan to take decisive action against terrorist groups based there that threaten its own people and the broader region,” he said during a recent speech at Washington’s Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

“It is the obligation, not choice, of every civilised nation to combat the scourge of terrorism. The United States and India are leading that regional effort together,” he said.

It is, therefore, no coincidence that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani will visit India on Tuesday on the very day Tillerson lands in India. The Economic Times wrote.

The Trump administration has put India as the key player in its Afghan strategy – a point that was also underlined by US Defence Secretary James Mattis during his visit last month, according to officials.

While India has made it clear that it will not send troops to Afghanistan, it will work with the US on strengthening the security architecture for the Afghan government through information sharing and training of security personnel.
