Art Classes For Kabul’s Vulnerable Teenagers and Children

Housed in a shipping container, an organization in the west of Kabul is providing training in music, theatre, art and handicrafts to vulnerable children and teenagers in the city.

The paintings from the institute depict kindness, unity, culture and tolerance.

The organization was established five years ago and so far dozens of children and youngsters have benefited.

Some volunteers who have been trained by the institution have now started training other students there.

Qudratullah, a teenager, said he learned to play the Dombra at the institution and he now teaches other music students at the center.

The youngest student in the class, Mustafa, is 11 years old and goes to the center for handcraft lessons.

“We have an easy task. We buy colored socks, rice, cotton and other small tools by paying a little money. We make snowmen, rabbits and other handmade toys from it and we sell them for 30 to 40 AFs each,” he said.

Hajar and Masooma, two other students, said the activities offered in the container class give them a chance to improve their art skills.

“We can pay some expenses for our families by making these handicrafts,” Masooma said.

“Besides being good entertainment, we have an income from the work we do,” Hajar said.

The organization’s owner, Naeem Karimi, said they started the center to help children.

“One good thing about this container is that it is movable. We were faced with some problems in the past but now we are among the people,” he said.

The outer walls of the container are decorated with paintings from the students which depict peace and unity; while the inside of the container is decorated with handmade toys and other beautiful paintings made by the students.
