‘The breadwinner’ – Angelina Jolie’s animated film about an Afghan girl, has been nominated for the Golden Globe Award for best motion picture.
The Golden Globe Awards 2018 nominees were announced on Tuesday morning by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Golden Globes honor the year’s best in film and TV movies, split into the genres of comedy (or musical) and drama.
This animation tells the story of a young Afghan girl named Parvana who cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy so as to earn money for her family after the Taliban imprisoned her father.
The girl also risks her life in a bid to find out whether her father is still alive.
The Breadwinner is based on a children's novel of the same name by Deborah Ellis and will be released later this year.
The storyline appears to be similar to that of Osama, a 2003 drama film made in Afghanistan. The movie Osama rocketed to fame after winning numerous awards, including a Golden Globe for best foreign language movie.
The film follows a pre-teen girl living in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime who disguises herself as a boy named Osama to support her family. It was the first film to be shot entirely in Afghanistan since 1996 when the Taliban regime banned the creation of all films.
The following films are nominated for the same category:
The Boss Baby
The Breadwinner
Ferdinand
Coco
Loving Vincent
