Mining Plan To Increase National Revenue: Ministry of Mines

Officials from the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) on Wednesday said that with the implementation of the mining plan, Afghanistan will vastly increase its national revenue.

The roadmap is a program aimed to overcome challenges facing the mining sector in the country, and the ministry of mines and petroleum, by using it, will be able to better manage the mines, said MoMP spokesman Abdul Qadeer Mutfi.

But members of the Natural Resources Monitoring Network (NRMN) have said that until now, the government has not managed to define a clear strategy when it comes to the increase of national revenue from the mining sector.

Transparency in mining contracts, using the available resources and prioritizing the mine projects are among key items which have been laid out in the new plan.

“Economic growth and social development have been predicted in the roadmap from the natural resources. We hope that the roadmap helps us to overcome the issues,” said MoMP spokesman Abdul Qadeer Mufti.

NRMN says that such roadmaps cannot prevent the ongoing irregularities in the mining sector and the illegal plundering by powerful elements.

“Without defining a clear and working strategy for development from the mining resources in the long term, these kinds of roadmaps will not be helpful,” said  Ibrahim Jaffari, member of NRMN.

The Afghan government has been under severe criticisms over its failure to ensure the management of mines.

According to economic analysts, over the past few years, the ministry of mines and petroleum has lost large parts of its human resources and this has paved the way for the embezzlement of revenue achieved from the mining sector.
