Turkmen Delegation In Kabul To Discuss Power Projects

A high-level delegation from Turkmenistan arrived in Kabul on Sunday to assess power export needs to Afghanistan and to discuss Afghanistan-Turkmenistan joint power projects, energy and water ministry officials confirmed.

Officials from the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) said the delegation, in addition to assessing Turkmenistan power exports to Afghanistan, will also hold talks with Afghan officials on a new project which will see Turkmenistan transmitting power to Pakistan through Afghanistan.

Energy and water deputy minister Abdul Basir Azimi said a trilateral meeting will be held in the near future between representatives from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Pakistan to discuss the project.

“We have made a deal with the Asian Development Bank about the Turkmenistan power transit project to Pakistan which will go through Afghanistan’s western provinces,” said Azimi.

A number of economic analysts meanwhile said Afghanistan is located between energy rich countries in the north and by countries in need of energy in the south and that it is a good power transmission corridor between the north and south.

“If we have good management, we can make our regional importance very strong in terms of transit,” economic lecturer Sayed Massoud said.
