The Iranian parliament has amended the law on counter-narcotics on the basis of which long term imprisonment and cash fines will replace the death penalty for drug smugglers.

Under the new law, smugglers who are caught with less than a 100kg of opium and 2kg of cocaine or heroin will not face the death penalty.
