MEHWAR: Robotics Team’s Visit To U.S Discussed

The all-girls national robotics team who were earlier denied visas to attend an international robotics competition in Washington were given a warm welcome at Dulles International Airport by Afghans and Americans after landing in the United States early Saturday.

The girls are taking part in FIRST Global Challenge — a three-day international robotics competition that aims to promote science and technology among youths worldwide. The contest started on Monday.

U.S authorities initially refused to issue the girls with visas.

But the U.S president intervened following a public outcry over the Afghan girls' inability to attend the event. The revised decision was announced on Wednesday.

The six teenage girls from Afghanistan’s robotics team arrived in Kabul from Herat on Thursday afternoon to collect their visas for the U.S and said they were very grateful to everyone who had worked to get the original decision overturned.

Host Fawad Aman discusses the topic with Ahmad Shah Muhibi, from a civil society institution in the U.S.
