Chicago Residents Rally Against Trump's Jerusalem Declaration

A day after US President Donald Trump announced the United States would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, demonstrators took to the streets in Chicago to protest the move, Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

Several hundred protesters Thursday afternoon, US time, gathered at Chicago’s Federal Plaza waving Palestinian flags and chanting, “Free Palestine!” as they condemned Trump’s declaration of support to move to the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a city both Palestinians and Israelis claim as their capital.

“This unilateral move is further proof of the fact that Trump and the US are not, and have never been, honest brokers for peace in the Middle East,” Deanna Othman, a member of Coalition for Justice in Palestine, said in a statement, as mentioned in Chicago Tribune’s report.

Protesters shouted and marched through streets in the Loop, bringing already congested rush hour traffic to halt. Organizers led protesters across the Madison Street bridge and in front of the 500 W. Madison building, home of the Consulate General of Israel.

The peaceful Chicago protest coincided with unrest in Jerusalem after Palestinian leaders called for “three days of rage.”

This comes after Trump announced that he officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Trump described the decision as "a long overdue step" to advance the Middle East peace process.

The US leader said his country would support a two-state solution if approved by both the Israelis and the Palestinians.

“Israel is a sovereign nation with the right, like every other sovereign nation, to determine its own capital,” Trump said.
