An Afghan soldier was killed after killing two Spanish police officers in the western Badghis province on Wednesday morning, officials say

"An Afghan soldier and a Spanish soldier fired bullets on each other due to unknown reasons on Wednesday morning, in which the Afghan soldier was killed," Sharafuddin Majidi, a spokesman for the governor of Badghis told TOLOnews reporter.

The killed soldiers family and relatives and residents in Qala-e-Naw, the province's provincial capital, staged huge violent protests following the incident, Majidi added.

He emphasised that the angry protesters were throwing stones on foreign soldiers and burnt car tires near a police checkpoint.

According to Badghis local authorities, an Afghan police was killed in clashes with angry protesters.

The Afghan soldier, who was receiving training, suddenly argues with the Spanish military trainers and starts firing in which 4 Spanish soldiers were killed, and in counter-firings by Spanish forces, the Afghan soldier was killed, a local official told TOLOnews reporter on condition of anonymity.

The killed Afghan soldier had ties with Mullah Siah, a Taliban commander, he added.

Most of the shops in the area are reportedly closed and Afghan forces have cordoned off the area.

Local people also claimed the death of 4 Spanish soldiers in the incident.

The Spanish Interior Ministry confirmed that two Spanish police officers were killed in the incident.

According to the icasualties.org that tracks the death of foreign soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, at total of 28 Spanish soldiers have been killed in Afghan war since Spain sent its first troops in the country in 2004.

Spain has 1555 soldiers in Afghanistan, most of them stationed in the western provinces of Herat and Badghis.
