Robert Gates, the US Secretary of Defence arrived to Kabul on Thursday morning in an unexpected visit

Mr Gates is supposed to have a joint press conference with the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, on Thursday evening.

Following a visit from Baghdad, where he participated in ceremonies marking the formal end of the US military mission in Iraq, Mr Gates flew to Kabul Thursday to hold talks with Key Afghan officials and the US foreign forces commander in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon Chief makes a surprise visit to Afghanistan as insurgency is at its highest since the Taliban regime was ousted in 2001.

Meanwhile, on the one hand Afghanistan is approaching the parliamentary poll day and on the other hand candidates and campaigners are victims of the Afghan war.
