The US top commander in Afghanistan has called for additional 2,000 troops in Afghanistan, including a number of US forces, reports say
The proposal hasn't been made public by Petraeus, but a US defence official with the knowledge about the entire matter confirmed it.
The US four-star general has briefed the proposal to NATO officials behind closed doors.
The additional 2,000 troops that may head to Afghanistan in some weeks include 750 personnel to serve as trainers for Afghan forces and the rest will fight specifically against IEDs, according to reports.
The trainers would work to teach Afghan forces how to support their operations in the field.
A final decision has yet to be made by US military officials.
The reports on additional 2,000 troops come some time after General David Petraeus had remarked in a press conference that his troops had reversed the Taliban momentum in key parts of Afghanistan.
