Syria dismissed the Arab League's proposition for President Bashar al-Assad to step down on Monday, Reuters reported.

After 10 months of seeking to overthrow Assad, Syria rejected the Arab League's intervention and plans to get him to step down, Reuters reported.

"Syria rejects the decisions of the Arab League ministerial council ... and considers them a violation of its national sovereignty and a flagrant interference in its internal affairs," an official Syrian source quoted by the state news agency SANA said.

Tensions between Syria and the Arab Leauge began when Saudi Arabia pulled its monitors out of Syria.

"The Syrian government did not execute any of the elements of the Arab resolution plan," said Saudi Foreign Minister, Saud al-Faisal.

During the 10 months of uprising 5,000 people have been killed, according to UN reports.

The plan listed multiple demands including orders for Assad to end the violence in Syria, withdraw his troops from urban areas, free those imprisoned during the uprising, and allow for Syrian citizens to peacefully protest, Reuters reported.
