US President Barack Obama stressed the importance of an economy that benefits everyone in his third State of the Union address.

He renewed his call for higher taxes on the wealthy, in the speech that typically sets the White House's policy agenda for the year ahead.

In November's elections, Mr Obama will make a bid for another four years in office. His Republican opponents are vehemently opposed to tax increases.

"We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by, or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same set of rules," Mr Obama said.

The US economy is recovering from the 2007-09 recession but unemployment remains high at 8.5 per cent.
