The UN Security Council has met to discuss a draft resolution against the Syrian government, the BBC reported.

The US is under pressure from activists and the Arab League to take firmer action after a swell in lethal violence this week.

A resolution drafted by the UK, France, Germany and Arab states, backs the League's call for President Bashar al-Assad to transfer power to a deputy.

Russia, an ally of Mr Assad, has said it will not support the resolution.

During the 10 months of uprising 5,000 people have been killed, according to UN reports.
