70 Year Old Woman A Fitness Instructor

A 70 year old Afghan woman has been running a fitness club for women in Kabul for the last nine years and says her good health is all due to her healthy lifestyle.

Parwin Sofi said it is because of sport that she is healthy and fit despite being 70.

“It is because of sport that I am healthy,” said Sofi.

Sofi said she opened the club nine years ago and since then the number of women registering continues to increase.

According to Sofi, at first women who had  problems were referred to the club, but recently young girls have become more interested in joining her fitness club.

“First the ladies who had some sort of mental health or physical problems came here. But recently more young girls come to the club to not only stay healthy, but also to stay fit,” Sofi added.

Sofi and her husband urged the people to let their daughters play sport.

“Families should let their daughters play sport, because sport will help them give birth to healthy babies and to have a healthy life and healthy thoughts,” Sofi’s husband Abdul Hamdi Sofi said.

Partaking in sport and going to gyms or fitness clubs has been taboo for Afghan women but in the last five years more and more women are partaking in sports.
