Afghanistan Cruises To Innings Victory Over Hong Kong

Afghanistan topped the ICC Intercontinental Cup table after cruising to a comprehensive innings and 173 run-victory against Hong Kong on Friday.

According to the ICC, a disciplined effort from the Afghanistan bowlers saw Hong Kong being bundled out for 150 in 39.4 overs in its second innings on the second day of the four-day encounter.

Barring, Anshuman Rath who made a fighting 59 not out, the other batsmen failed to get some runs and fell at regular intervals. The next highest score was 26 by Nizakat Khan, who was dismissed by Rashid Khan.

Hong Kong, who was bowled out for just 142 in its first innings, couldn't prevent Afghanistan from amassing 465 for 5 declared in its first dig, reported the ICC.

Afghanistan rode on centuries from Javed Ahmadi (108 off 113 balls) and Asghar Stanikzai (125 off 129 balls) along with notable contributions from Ihsanullah Jannat (63), Rahmat Shah (57) and Mohammad Nabi (63) to stretch the lead to 323 runs.

Resuming the second morning on 270 for 2, Rahmat, who was unbeaten on 34 compiled a patient 57 before being dismissed by Ehsan Khan, the offspinner, while Stanikzai, the skipper, went on to make a hundred. His 125 off 129 balls was studded with 11 boundaries and seven sixes before he was caught by Rath off Nizakat Khan’s bowling.

To add to the two hundreds and the equal number of fifties by the top four batsmen, Nasir Jamal (37 not out) and Nabi helped Afghanistan consolidate further and take the visitor to a massive total.

It was a forgettable day for Hong Kong’s bowlers with Kyle Christie, the medium pacer, picking up a wicket on his debut, while Nizakat Khan and Ehsan Khan shared a wicket apiece.

ICC reported that trailing by 323 runs, Hong Kong lost both its openers early. Dawlat Zadran, the medium pacer, accounted for Christopher Carter and then returned to dismiss Babar Hayat, the captain, for 18, while Matt Stiller, the other opener, was stumped by Afsar Zasai off Rashid’ s bowling.

Nabi, the offspinner, then struck twice to remove Waqas Khan and Ehsan Khan for just eight runs and Zahir Khan, the legspinner, took over by prizing out the lower order with swift strikes. He finished with figures of 4 for 16, while Nabi, Dawlat and Rashid chipped in two wickets each.
