Afghan Judo Champ In Brazil For Rio Olympics

Thirty-one-year-old Bakhshi is one of Afghanistan's sports stars who will represent the country at this year's Rio Olympics.

Three world-class Afghan athletes have arrived in Rio where hard work is the order of the day. All three are training hard ahead of their events.

Two of the athletes are men and one is a women. They are Tawfiq Bakhshi, a Judo champion and Wahab Zahir, a runner, who will take part in the men's 200m race.

Kimya Yousufi will participate in the ladies 100m race.

Bakhshi meanwhile has been part of the National Judo Team for the past 14 years and is also currently the team's coach.

Since joining the national team, he has won 10 medals including gold, silver and bronze in the South Asian games.

According to him, he has been a Judo fan since childhood and has always dreamed of taking part in the Olympic Games. He said, this year his dream finally came true.

Bakhshi has however, traveled extensively through Judo and participated in competitions in Brazil, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Iran, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi – all for his country.

Bakhshi, who arrived in Rio last week with his fellow Olympians is training hard already in Brazil ahead of the Games which officially opens on Friday (Brazil time).

He will come up against stiff competition in his 90+kg weight division.

Bakhshi's event is scheduled to be held on August 10.
