Zahiri An Olympic Medal Hopeful For Afghanistan

Wahab Zahiri is one of three Afghan athletes at this year's Olympic Games.

He says Usain Bolt, the world's fastest runner, is his role model.

Zahiri is 23 years old and was born in Sar Shahi village in Nangarhar province.

Zahiri was selected to represent Afghanistan in Rio after setting a qualifying time of 10.75 seconds in the 100 m race.

According to him, he started running while at Peshawar Islamia University in Pakistan - where he lived for 10 years.

Three world-class Afghan athletes are in Rio for the Games.

Two of the athletes are men and one is a women. Apart from Zahiri, the team includes Tawfiq Bakhshi, a Judo champion and Kimya Yousufi, who will participate in the ladies 100m and 200m race.

Zahiri has only once participated in a cross-border competition‎ - which was in 2016 at the South Asian Games in India. However, now he has the chance to shine at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
