Today is the 28th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan.

The Soviet troops left Afghanistan after a 10-year war which claimed the lives of over a million people and left millions more wounded.

The Soviet Union had 120,000 soldiers equipped with modern weapons and invaded Afghanistan on 27 December 1979 from both the ground and air.
