Russian, Iranian and Turkish Leaders Meet Over Syria

Speaking after a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Sochi, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that trilateral talks between them will help advance the peace settlement in Syria.

Addressing the media, Putin said that they had agreed to encourage efforts to establish a dialogue between various political groups in Syria, Associated Press reported.

Putin said: "As the country-guarantors, Russia, Iran and Turkey continue working closely on strengthening the ceasefire regime, stable functioning of de-escalation zones, raising trust between the conflict sides."

"I'd like to stress that the presidents of Iran and Turkey supported the initiative to stage an all-Syrian forum - congress of national dialogue in Syria," he said.

"We plan to gather members of various political parties, internal and external opposition, ethnic and religious groups at the negotiation table. The congress will consider key issues of the Syrian national agenda that are first of all connected with developing a future state structure, adopting a new constitution, organizing elections based on it (new constitution) under supervision of the United Nations Organization."

Putin added: "The fate of Syria should be determined by Syrians themselves, both the supporters of the current government and the opposition."

The trilateral meeting follows Syrian President Bashar Assad's surprise visit to Russia on Monday, which the Kremlin said helped lay the groundwork for Wednesday's meeting.
