ACJC Probes Claims Of Misuse Of Authority By Acting Mayor

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) said on Friday the Anti-Corruption Justice Center (ACJC) will investigate allegations that Kabul’s acting mayor Abdullah Habibzai has been misusing his authority.

According the AGO, they have received documents indicating misuse of authority by the acting mayor and some of his staff.

“There are accusations of misuse of authorities against Kabul’s acting mayor and a number of staff at the department. In order to identify what sections the accusations refer to, the case should be probed in accordance with the law,” AGO spokesman Jamshid Rasooli said.

Habibzai however said he has not done anything wrong and that the accusations are made by some circles to put him under pressure.

“Those circles that work against us and government, everyday try to accuse us. I say that I have not done anything illegal and that these accusations are baseless,” said Habibzai.

Integrity Watch Afghanistan (IWA) officials meanwhile claimed Habibzai gave development contracts to companies he has close ties with.

Nasir Timori, a member of IWA said there is some corruption in the recruitment process in the department and urged the relevant departments to probe Habibzai’s case transparently.

“There is (corruption) in recruitment and giving of contracts to those who Kabul’s acting mayor used to work with. This issue should be probed transparently,” said Timori.

IWA urged the ACJC to investigate Habibzai’s case and share the results with the public.
