Analysts See Trump War Strategy Critical In Fighting Terror

Afghan political commentators have appraised US President Donald Trump’s announcement that his administration will send thousands more American troops to Afghanistan to help combat the Taliban insurgency that has plagued the Afghan people since 2001 and his clear message to Pakistan over its controversial role in the fight against terror.

The analysts see the Trump’s new war strategy on Afghanistan a completely “military strategy” and say that the war against terrorism in the country will be taken seriously following the new policy.

“The announcement to remain alongside Afghanistan and the reaffirmation of the commitment in fighting terrorism are part of the US policies towards state-building in Afghanistan,” said Faramarz Tamanna, head of the strategic studies department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Other issues such as the rule of law and security will improve if the Afghan government is strengthened.”

Meanwhile, there are speculations that the new war strategy will have implications and sensitivities among the countries in the region and also the new war plan will fuel conflict and violence in the country.

Although, president Trump did not elaborate on the exact number of troops he will send to Afghanistan, but stressed that after this, the US strategy on Afghanistan will move ahead on the basis of the conditions on the ground, but not on the basis of a specific calendar.

“It has three important messages to the people of Afghanistan and the Americans: First, it specifies that the US will remain committed to Afghanistan on the permanent basis. Second, it sends a clear message to Pakistan that it can no longer go ahead with supporting the terrorists, and third, it does not mention an exact timetable for the withdrawal of US forces from the country,” political analyst Hamid Saboori said.

Elimination of Daesh and al-Qaeda remnants and preventing the Taliban from gaining control on areas comprises the important parts of the new strategy announced today by Trump.

“This approach in a large manner is optimistic for Afghan government, because this is the first time that the US is taking a clear approach towards Afghanistan,” said Najib Muhajer, an international affairs analyst.

But some analysts argue that there is no guarantee for the success of the new Afghan US policy as it can spark strong retaliation among regional players.
