Calls For Unity Grow As Mosque Attack Victims Buried

Hundreds of people gathered at cemeteries around Kabul on Saturday to bury their loved ones killed in Friday’s suicide bombing at the Imam Zaman mosque in Darch-e-Barchi.

Over 50 people, who had gathered for evening prayers, were killed in the attack.

Most of the victims were buried in Karokh Hill in the west of Kabul – where mourners called on the nation to stay united.

The head of religious and mosque affairs commission said the enemies cannot create discord among the people by carrying out such attacks.

“Although lots of people have been killed and lots of families have been affected, our people are cautious, and they would not accept such a conspiracy,” said the head of the commission Mohaqiq Zada.

On Friday evening a Daesh militant detonated his explosives among the worshipers – also killing and wounding women and children.

At some cemeteries people were carrying bodies in groups before burying them on the hillside.

“If it is Taliban or Daesh, it is known that government is with them, but they have killed innocent people,” Ewaz Ali, a relative of a victim, said.

“Based on the Constitution, the first obligation of government is to secure people’s security. It is a shame for government that it cannot maintain security,” said Amanullah Dadgar, arelative of one victim.

The Imam from the mosque that came under attack was among those killed in the explosion. He was also buried on Saturday along the other victims.

Religious scholars at the burial ceremonies meanwhile also called on the nation to remain united.

“Thanks to the security forces for maintaining security today and thanks to all the people,” Jafar Musavi, a religious scholar, said.

The Afghan interior ministry has meanwhile only confirmed that 39 people were killed but members of the religious and mosques affairs commission said 60 people were killed in the incident. UNAMA meanwhile put the death toll at 50.
