Local official in Ghazni said clashes are ongoing between government forces and Taliban militants in Qarabagh district in the province.

Ghazni Police Chief Farid Ahmad Mashal said Taliban attacked the district on Thursday night and that clashes are still ongoing. 

He said the situation in the district in concerning but added that reinforcement troops are on their way to Qarabagh.

This comes as President Ashraf Ghani arrived in Ghazni City on Friday morning. 

The Presidential Palace said the president will meet security officials to assess the security situation and will attend prayers ceremony for those who lost their lives in the last days of clashes in the city. 

Sources said that the situation in Andar district in Ghazni is also concerning in terms of security. 

Ghazni’s private sector sustained an estimated $50 million in losses during the four-day siege of Ghazni over the weekend, the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) said following a preliminary investigation this week. 

Their probe found that markets have burned down, along with some buildings and shops as well as all the goods inside. 

The clashes in Ghazni started in the early hours of Friday morning and ended on Tuesday – although clashes are still ongoing on the outskirts of the city. 

One analyst said the city was a small trading hub which has been reduced to a heap of rubble.

Taliban attacked Ghazni City last week early on Friday morning. The city was cleared of the group on Tuesday after four days of clashes in the central parts of the city.
