Concerns Rise Over Possible Taliban Attacks On Herat Districts

A number of Herat provincial council members on Saturday raised concerns over a possible Taliban attack on Shindand and Oba districts in Herat province.

They said that Taliban have increased their activities in the two districts and it is possible that the Taliban will carry out attacks.

“Provincial NDS director also admitted that two districts could collapse. We have military council in Herat and the council have to decide rescue the districts,” said Ghulam Habib Hashimi Herat provincial council member.

“We have never witnessed any improvement in the security of Herat and if the security situation deteriorates maybe the elections will not be held in Herat, we ask security forces to pay attention to the people’s concerns,” said Sayed Ashraf Sadat a civil society activist.

Herat police chief Aminullah Amarkhail rejected claims the districts security situation was failing and said that Taliban do not have the ability to conduct a wide range attacks.

“I reject completely that Herat districts will fall, I personally spent 10 days traveling to several districts, there is no serious threat,” said Amarkhail.

The police chief admits that there are some small groups active in some villages in the districts.

Shindand and Oba districts are the insecure districts of the Herat province where Taliban have in the past been active.
