Eklil Hakimi Steps Down As Finance Minister

Eklil Ahmad Hakimi announced on Tuesday that he has resigned from his position as Finance Minister of Afghanistan due to "a personal reason".

"Today during my press conference about MoF's achievements, I also announced tomorrow as my last working day as Afghanistan’s Finance Minister. With many family priorities, I decided to step back from work and care best for my loved ones," Hakimi tweeted hours after his press conference.

He was appointed to the position in February 2015.

He is a former Afghan diplomat and has served as Afghanistan's deputy foreign minister as well as Afghanistan’s ambassador to China, Japan and the United States.

Although, Hakimi said that he had convinced President Ashraf Ghani about his resignation, but in his speeches, Hakimi also talked about the trust by former president Hamid Karzai in him, saying Karzai appointed him in several key posts.

“I also express my gratitude to my former bosses and the previous cabinet, initially former president Hamid Karzai and the incumbent president who sees him (Karzai) as a national symbol,” he said.

Hakimi also appreciated some former cabinet ministers.

He also talked about the conflict of interests between powerful countries in the world.

Hakimi was one of the most trusted ministers of Ghani’s cabinet. He was also awarded Ghazi Wazir Akbar Khan medal in recognition of his services and attracting international aid.

“The president realized my problems and he kindly accepted it. Tomorrow I will attend the cabinet minister and this will mark my last working day at the finance ministry,” he said.

“The performance of minister of finance is quite clear. He has done a lot of unforgettable services alongside his working team,” said Deputy Minister of Finance Mohammad Aqa Kohistani.

Over the past one month the resignation of some cabinet ministers and dismissal by the president has led to some confusions.

It is said that some more resignations will happen in the near future.

An MP, Nazeer Ahmad Hanafi, said the resignations are as a result of domestic and international pressure.

“These resignations are caused as a result of domestic and international pressure and they have political motives,” he said.

Implementing reforms in the monetary system of Afghanistan, attracting the confidence of the donors and spending the aid through the national budget, 70 percent increase of the national revenues, curbing corruption in the government’s income sources are among top legacies of Hakimi during his 3.5 year working period as mentioned by the ministry.

However, some economy affairs experts say a number of these programs have not been implemented so far.

Hakimi Says National Revenue Is Increasing

Addressing the press conference on Tuesday, Hakimi said Afghanistan’s national revenue is increasing. He said improvement in the national revenue of the first six months of this year shows it will increase to 200 billion AFs (over $2.7 billion) by the end of the year.

“Based on the assessments at the end of the first six months of the fiscal year, our prediction is that our revenue will increase to 180 up to 200 billion AFs,” said Hakimi.

Statistics by Finance Ministry show that in the first six months of this year, the ministry has collected over 77 billion AFs (over $106.4 million) as national revenue.

Hakimi added that the international community has pledged in written to inject $2.5 billion to Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF) – which is a coordinated financing mechanism for Afghan government's budget and priority national investment projects.
