EU Envoy Meets Peace Activists, Pledges Support

The People’s Peace Movement gathered outside the European Union office in Kabul on Saturday in the hope of getting the organization’s help for Afghanistan’s peace process.

The movement handed an album of war photographs to the European Union Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon and asked the EU to support Afghanistan’s efforts to end the war.

Mayaudon meanwhile vowed to share the demands of the peace movement with the ambassadors of 11 European countries in Kabul on Sunday.

“Tomorrow I am meeting with my eleven colleagues as the ambassadors of the member states of European Union who are based in Kabul and whatever we have discussed at this moment, I will of course share with them,” the EU ambassador said.

“These are the countries which are silent therefore we are not happy with them. They see everything but why are they not raising their voices? They know what is extremism, what is killing humans and what is calamity,” said Iqbal Khyber, head of the peace movement.

The peace activists have so far staged sit-in protests outside the embassies of US, Russia, Pakistan, Iran and outside the UN office in Kabul.

The activists arrived in Kabul last month after walking for 38 days from Helmand. So far a number of embassies have said they will support peace efforts.
