Explosion In Eastern Afghanistan Leaves Seven Children Dead

At least seven children were killed and as many others were wounded when an unexploded ordnance detonated in the eastern Laghman province on Sunday evening, the provincial governor’s spokesman Assadullah Dawlatzai said.

The children were playing outside their houses in Basram area, a village on the outskirts of the Mihtarlam city, the center of Laghman, when they were hit by an unexploded ordnance, he said.

He said the incident took place at around 5pm local time.

Figures by government show that at least 120 civilians are affected by mines and unexploded ordnance every month as they are either killed or maimed.  

The statistics show that at least 3,400 square kilometers of land has been cleared of mines and unexploded ordnance, but 1,700 square kilometers is yet to be cleared.
