Family Of Slain Policewomen Want Promises Fulfilled

The parents of two young policewomen who were shot dead by Taliban in Badakhshan province seven months ago said government promised them apartments but nothing has been forthcoming so far.

Noor Haya and Manoora, who were sisters, were active policewomen in Faizabad City and were the only breadwinners of their 13-member family.

They were in a car with their mother when they were stopped by four armed men and abducted.

The body of one was found eight days later next to a river however the body of the second woman is still missing. She is however thought to have been shot.

The mother of the two policewomen said her daughters joined the Afghan police force one year before they were killed.

“I asked the Chatta (an area on the outskirts of Faizabad City) Police Headquarters to follow up the issue, but they did nothing,” Jahan Ara, the mother said. “The police chief went to the scene at 4pm and by that time they (armed men) had killed them.”

Jahan Ara said she has struggled to get the promised apartment for six months but nothing has been done to resolve the issue.

She said government has not delivered in its promise. The family has left their house in Badakhshan ‘due to security reasons’ and are in the central parts of Faizabad city.

“I was told that my recommendation letter is at the Presidential Palace and it will be approved. Last time I was in Kabul for one month and this time it is 20 days that I am here. I have had to stay in houses of people and in a hotel with my younger daughter,” Jahan Ara said.

The Interior Ministry’s deputy spokesman Nusrat Rahimi meanwhile  said the ministry has provided two apartments and other assistance to the family.

“Some of the work is done and parts of the process have remained. When the process is complete, they will be given two apartments that have been promised by the Interior Ministry,” said Rahimi.

The Interior Ministry has arrested two suspects in connection with the incident, he said.

Badakhshan has on a few occasions witnessed incidents in which women are shot dead by armed groups.

Last year, armed groups killed a number of people, including women, in areas out of government’s control.
