Frantic Shopkeepers Move Stock As Fire Rips Through Market

Desperate shopkeepers were on Thursday night trying to save their goods as a fire raged through an electronics market area in Kabul city.

The fire started at about 6pm local time and was still not under control by 9pm.

The fire first started in Khairkhwah Market Building in Nadir Pashtun Street in Kabul’s PD1 but surrounding shopkeepers frantically removed stock in fear of the fire spreading.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established but one eyewitness said an electrical fault had sparked the inferno.

Police closed off the area to traffic in the vicinity of the blaze as firefighters continued to try to bring it under control.

The firefighters were at the scene minutes after the fire broke out, police spokesman Basir Muajhid told TOLOnews.

Footage from the scene, taken about three hours after it started, shows Khairkhwah Market still burning.

Shops in this three-story building sell mostly electronic equipment, from computers to refrigerators and other home appliances.

Eyewitnesses report extensive damage has been caused to the building and some surrounding shops.
