Senior Afghan security officials as well as the US and NATO Forces Commander in Afghanistan Gen. Scott Miller in a visit to Herat province met with provincial governor and other officials to discuss the security situation in the province.

Lt. Gen. Yasin Zia the Deputy Minister of Defense and Brig. Gen. Koshal Sadat Deputy Minister of Interior for Security also attended the meeting.

The deputies of the defense and interior ministries stressed the need for coordination between Afghan security forces and provincial government in Herat.

“We need to go after the enemy. We are an offensive, mobile force.  This is the culture of our force,” Zia said. “Commanders will go out to the field with their Soldiers. They will meet and take care of our Soldiers. Herat will be a role model for the rest of the country.”

“The criminals in Herat need to know that they are dealing with the real police here,” Sadat said.

Herat Governor Asif Rahimi said there is a need for increasing the facilities and structure of the Afghan security forces units in the province.

“The Afghan Security Forces in Herat have been working day and night for the people,” he said. “We will go straight at the enemy. They have weapons, we have weapons. The Taliban will be hit anywhere they will face us.”

“The people of Herat are rejecting the Taliban. The police can do their job because of the people’s support,” Herat Police Chief Aminullah Amarkhil said.

Meanwhile, Gen. Miller said they remain committed to peace in Afghanistan and in the meantime, they remain committed to supporting Afghan forces in their fight against militants.

“I’m always very proud and supportive of the security forces. What’s interesting now is listening to the people. And I hear the Afghan people saying it’s time for peace,” he said. “Unfortunately, as we work toward peace there is still fighting. And there are far too many Afghans losing their lives as a result of this fighting. So, you do know I am committed to peace but at the same time I know there is a fight and we remain committed to supporting you in that fight.”

This is the first visit of the security officials meeting to Herat this year.
