Ghani Appoints Matin Bek as New IDLG Chairman

President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday officially appointed 30-year-old Abdul Matin Bek as the new chairman of the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG), saying the appointment of youths to key posts indicates government’s resolve towards reconstruction of the country and to using the skills of the younger generation.

He said that the IDLG has a critical role to play and it is the backbone of stability and prosperity in the country.

“The IDLG is a connecting bridge between the local administrations and the central government. The participation of people plays a critical role in maintaining stability and good governance,” said Ghani.

According to Ghani, in the past, more attention was paid to ministries and less focus was on provinces, but over the past three years, this approach has changed and more attention has been paid to the provinces and the process will continue.

Meanwhile, Bek thanked the leadership of the government for the trust they have shown in him and said that he will do his best to improve good governance in the country.

“Promoting better capacity in local institutions, giving particular roles to governors and boosting the ability of local institutions would be the top agenda,” said Bek.

Referring to his work experience, Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, said Bek has held a number of posts and has been an honest employee. He in turn called on all IDLG employees to work with their new leader.

“Our young generation, which we hope will be the bet generation in our history are serving the people and the government in various spheres,” said Ghani.

Bek has also served as an adviser to the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and to the deputy head of National Directorate of Security (NDS) for provinces. Bek has a bachelor's degree and a master’s degree from an Indian university.
