President Ashraf Ghani addressed the nation on Wednesday morning and wished everyone a happy new year.
After planting a tree in the grounds of the Presidential Palace to mark Nawroz, the president, who was accompanied by his wife Rula Ghani, said there is much work to be done this year – especially on reforms, peace and elections.
He also said he hopes parliament remains accountable to the people in the year ahead.
On the topic of elections, he called on the people of Afghanistan to support the process and allow for reforms to be brought.
Ghani also stated that war was not the solution to the country’s problems but that government’s peace offer has the support of the nation.
The president also stated that a complete mind shift among the people was needed in order for peace, reforms and elections to be brought about. He emphasized the fact that Afghanistan had the ability to be self-sufficient.
According to him, two crucial projects will be implemented in this year and that more focus will be paid to education.
The First Lady Rula Ghani also addressed the nation. She wished everyone a happy new year and said she hopes for peace and security for the country in the year ahead.
