Govt Arrests Another Three in Apparent Crackdown On Militias

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Thursday that it had arrested another three powerful figures following Monday’s arrest of Nizamuddin Qaisari, a local police commander in northern Faryab province.

Qaisari who was arrested after allegedly insulting government officials, was immediately flown to Kabul where he is being held.

The defense ministry officials said Rahimullah, the commander of an illegal armed group in Uruzgan; Mohammad Daud Mubarez, who is suspected of selling weapons and security check points to the Taliban in Porchaman district of Farah province; and Nadir Shah, who is suspected of selling gemstones illegally in Badakhshan, were all arrested.

Officials said government believes these people are a threat to the security of Afghanistan, and that security forces “will continue to arrest such people”.

“Daud Mubarez was planning to undertake a range of anti-government activities in Purchaman district of Farah province, but he was arrested. There was another man named Rahimullah who had government’s military equipment in his possession, he was also arrested; in Badakhshan there was another person known as Nadir Shah who was involved in plundering the minerals and making problems for the people, he was also arrested by the security forces,” said MoD deputy spokesman Mohammad Radmanish.

But, in response to Radmanish’s statement, MP Maryam Kofi said that Nadir Shah is her brother and that he has not been arrested.

She said that Nadir Shah is an incumbent commander of government forces.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Haroon Chakhansuri, the president’s spokesman said investigations are still being conducted regarding Qaisari.

“Mr Qaisari is in the custody of the security forces, investigations are underway regarding him,” he said.

Dispelling rumors of Qaisari being held in a private home in Kabul, Chakhansuri said: “He is not being kept in anyone’s house or on private property.”

The latest arrests come just days after Qaisari, a close aide to exiled first vice president Abdul Rashid Dostum, was arrested in Faryab province for reportedly having insulted officials.

However, his arrest sparked widespread anger among residents in the north, who then embarked on protest action in a bid to secure his release.

On Wednesday night, a delegation was sent to Faryab to calm the situation after a day of violent protests in the provincial capital Maimana left a number of demonstrators wounded.

The arrests also come after Ghani on Tuesday said he had ordered a crackdown on militia groups after having received complaints from soldiers that these groups are contributing to the war and to the high casualty toll.

In the meantime, government officials said they would continue to arrest armed anti-government groups that threaten the country’s security.
