Govt Leaders Talk Peace, Elections on Occasion of Nawroz

President Ashraf Ghani on Wednesday said government is working on a number of programs for the new solar year including the introduction of reforms in the country’s education sector, fast-tracking parliamentary and district council elections and the peace process.

The Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah meanwhile said government expects a positive response to its offer of peace to the Taliban.

Both Ghani and Abdullah had been speaking on Wednesday on the occasion of Nawroz, the Persian new year.

The two officials called on the Afghan public to support and participate in the elections in order to determine the future of the country.

“Within the next six weeks, I will personally deal with the recommendations relating to commitment, resources and coordination (regarding elections),” said Ghani.

“Our expectation is that our message and our plan for peace is responded to positively by those who are at war,” said Abdullah in reference to government’s peace offer to the Taliban.

In addition Ghani said the war is not the solution to resolving the current crisis in the country.

“War is not the solution, any group that insists on waging war will face a resolute resistance from our people,” added Ghani.

But Abdullah clarified that if the peace offer did not yield an outcome, the Afghan security forces are ready to eliminate the opponents on the battlefields.

“Our security and defense forces are always ready to defend their country” said Abdullah.
