Heavy Clashes Ongoing In Badakhshan’s Zebak District

Badakhshan provincial council members said on Tuesday that heavy clashes have been ongoing between security forces and Taliban in Zebak district for the last three days.

According to council members, Taliban from Warduj and Yamgan districts launched coordinated attacks on Zebak and Arghanj Khwa districts three days ago.

Bashir Samim, the head of the provincial council, said Arghanj Khwa district is now relatively safe, but that all roads leading toZebak district have been cut off by the Taliban.

Samim said if reinforcement troops are not sent to the district, Zebak may fall to the Taliban.

“This year we saw Kohistan district fall to Taliban in one night. Currently Taliban have expanded their activities in a few districts,” Samim said.

“The enemy’s attack is ongoing on Zebak district. People and the civil society organizations are worried about the situation,” Saifuddin Sayes, head of Badakhshan’s civil society organizations said.

Badakhshan governor Faisal Bigzad meanwhile confirmed the clashes and said security forces have suffered casualties.

“The border battalion assured me that they have pushed back the enemy in Zebak district,” said Bigzad adding that additional troops have been deployed to the two districts to push back the Taliban.

“We have prepared offensive plans and the security forces in Badakhshan will put these plans into action,” Bigzad said.

Zebak borders Warduj district which is one of the most insecure districts in Badakhshan. It fell to the Taliban three years ago and isstill under the group’s control.
